Solitaire is the latest single by artist My Girl The River

This song, focusing on the ruination of life by alcohol addiction (as made clear by the opening line ‘I hate to say it again - the bottle is not your friend’), comes from a place of knowing. ‘I have addiction close to me, in my family, my own tendencies keep me on guard’ says Kris Wilkinson Hughes, the writer and artist behind the song. Bringing in some fantastic power-pop harmonies, layering, a false ending (whoa! 1970s anyone??) and frequent collaborator, Will Kimbrough, on all things electric guitar - both forward and backward, slide and picking. Kris produced and mixed this song some time ago at Super Tiny Studios, however, she felt that the time was right to give it a proper debut. ‘I had this up on Soundcloud, however, with a new album in the works featuring a collection of new and old songs, this one jumped to the top of the list. My teenager and My Girl The River band member, Rue, did a beautiful job on the cover art, and I had it mastered at Abbey Road Studios.’

The unusual thing about this song is it doesn’t have bass or drums, yet it feels fully realised with intuitive guitars, lush vocal layering and a slow build of intensity.

Full Lyrics:

I hate to say it again, the bottle is not your friend.
Run as far as you can when it tries to look you in the eye.
Here we go again, another revolution.
The circle doesn’t want to end and it’s so round I wanna break it down.

When the edges are so sharp they drive you into the light
Dressed up like a party, holding you so tight
And it wants you to forget, and it wants you to forget
And it wants you to forget the consequences

Don’t forget that time you went and lost your mind
She jumped into a car, it was the last time that you saw her.
Handing out the cards, is it really so very hard
To remember the rules of solitaire, you keep forgetting.

The edges are so sharp they drive you into the light
Dressed up like a party, holding you so tight
And it wants you to forget, and it wants you to forget
And it wants you to forget, and it wants you to forget
And it wants you to forget, and it wants you to forget
And it wants you to forget, and it wants you to forget…
